The first gen Hyundai Tucson. It is built here and offers a flex-fuel engine, it is also the cheapest armored SUV you can buy.

Kinja'd!!!

We also get the new one ( the weirdly named IX35) but for some reason Hyundai still has a market for this ancient beasts, I’m guessing middle-class families (Brazilian middle-class, not US middle-class mind you) buying their first SUV and Upper-class families buying one for their driver.

Kinja'd!!!

Updates are minimal over the 2005 model, some facelifting here and there, new seats, a shitty infotainment system and the 2.0 flex-fuel engine.

What is happening in Brazil that there is a market for an entry level armored compact crossover?

My mother-in-law had one of those (not armored). She traded it for a Suzuki SX4. My father-in-law was not happy about that. Anytime I’m alone with him he brings it up.

My question is why you guys never update your commercial vehicles, peugeot still sells vans there that are 10+ years old:

Same thing with Fiat, Renault and Citroen, how hard is it to build the new ones in Brazil?

a huge impoverished population ruled by a corrupt government that essentially ignores them and their problems. Any display of wealth in the wrong neighborhood could start something, well that's the justification at least. In American terms, think of the cliche white person in their bmw locking their doors in the ghetto, but on a larger scale. That same fear though.

Maybe manufacturers ship their old tooling to countries like Brazil when a new model is introduced in Europe (or the US, or South Korea)

My family has had one since 2005, and it’s even the primary car for each of us at some point.

That thing’s a tank. It has never let us down or had an issue that wasn’t routine maintenance.

Currently it has a massive gouge down the length of its right side because my little brother drove it into a mailbox...

I had no idea there was an armored Tucson, or an armored Hyundai, in existence. Someone driving one of these is someone who likely does not need to be assassinated.

I had one of these as a rental in the US back in 2009. It was pretty awful even back then. That being said, it's modern enough in the safety department to not be a complete death trap like some of the cars still sold in South America. Brazil seems to have higher standards, but for the right price with a warranty it makes sense to sell this old Tucson for a few more years.

Interestingly Hyundai have - at least in Europe - gone back to the Tucson name having used i35 to tie in with the rest of the range which all have letters and numbers.

Up until a 4-5 years ago you could still buy a brand new Nissan D21 in Venezuela. It’s since been replaced by what the rest of the world knows as the 1997 Frontier/Navara.
